Red wine
|
Right, I’m wondering if I’ve had something wrong with my tastebuds all my life. Keep on trying red wine of different types but I don’t get it, all this fruity, mellow, delicious shit, I ain’t getting and I don’t know why. I’d love to get the fruity, delicious bit. Done the let it breathe thing and the you need a bottle before you get it thing but just don’t.
My face just screws up , tongue hangs out and feels like it’s dried out every time.
Over to you aficionados or alkys to let me know where I’m going wrong.

Every region and every grower and maker can make good and bad wines. When recommending you need to recommend the actual wine and year otherwise your recommendation is too vague. I still think the OP probably is a super taster and has a problem with bitterness. There are plenty of people in this camp. If it was me I'd drink sweet wines as they would taste lovely assuming you could find the right ones.

If it's just for drinking, try a Malbec, Montepulciano, or Tempranillo.
If it's with steak etc., go with Chianti (Borollo if you can find it goes very well with filet steak or chateaubriand)
Avoid French and Spanish reds until you know what works for you. Italian, South African (Pinotage is worth a try), and New World are your best options.
Always get the best you can justify for the price, there's a lot of great wines for less than £10 a bottle.
Cheap wine is cheap for a reason. Expensive wine is expensive because people are stupid enough to think it must be good.
It's always worth looking in Aldi or Lidl for wine. They source from good quality producers who can't make enough to supply the big supermarkets and will buy their entire years crop. But if you find one you like, buy as much as you can because it will be gone and never seen again, unless next year's crop is as good.
I like red wine.

When it comes to whites, I prefer the ones with a stronger taste.
Currently, I'm drinking a surly musky day.
But I rarely drink whites at all apart from in Summer. It seems the season for them. Reds are all year round.

Just finishing off a SA Merlot called The Secretary Bird.

Increasingly finding myself not liking heavier >13% wines
So a lighter chianti or montipuliciano (someone correct the spelling) is my go to after a pint or two.

A nice Beaujolais Nouveau would be a good starting place, whenever the season is for that. Apart from that, stick to new world wines, which tend to be lighter and fruitier, especially Californian, S African and Australian.

Try Montecucco, a really good wine that can be drunk on its own or with a meal. In Waitrose.
Although I have a few bottles left from a shipment I had :)

Love a drop of red. Generally a cheapish Cote du Rhone, sometimes a Rioja. If I fancy something lighter maybe a Beaujolais. I'm not a fussy drinker.

Go to Majestic Wine and order either:
Portas 6 Guvnor Valpolicello
Or if you want a treat buy them all.
I am sure you'll change your mind.

The cooler a drink is the less taste it has. Generally. Think cold and warm coke. I prefer red wine at around 18 c but happy to drink it a bit cooler. I like real ale at 12 c and whites at around 7 c but warmer is fine for lots. A lot of craft ales are poured far too cold st around 7c but a cold lager is fucking lovely on a hot day.

Probably my favourite tipple with a good rum. Was luck to work in Lyon for 9 months so real Côtes du Rhône country. Had some very affordable Chateaux wines as even on a 6 figure salary I can have Chateaux Nueuf Du Papa and a Côte Rotie every night.
Not a massive fan of Bordeaux wines but I like a St Emillion.
Should be served between 14-18C. Chilled or warm red wine id disgusting.
I also like a good Rioja and an Argentinian Malbec.

Cheers lads, I’ve decided that the next time I’m in the Jalon Valley I’m going to book a wine tasting experience at one of the bodegas. Give it another try, as said earlier the wine is almost cheaper than water and the locals love it.
